In Which GWG Finally Updated Again - Canthan New Year's Festival Loff

Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Sure, I've died in DoA a couple of times recently, but I swear that doesn't count.

I've actually been quite a busy bee, what with having acquired a real life and everything. In the meantime, I've got some investigative journalism going, so hopefully there will soon be more shocking revelations concerning the Searing and other matters.

Before that, however, I need to address yet another of the many things I love in Guild Wars- community spirit. This weekend's event has showed me that it is not dead in Guild Wars at all, and I'm very glad to have seen it. I took part in one of the biggest 'charity' events I have heard of in Guild Wars- perhaps even the biggest one- and I had an absolute blast making people happy.

What event? The DVDF sponsor event.

So how did that work?

About a month before the announcement for the Canthan New Year festival, Shan made a post on the DVDF Alliance forums, suggesting that the alliance could sponsor a lot of banquets if we got an early start. He posted a list of ingredients, and many people spent the following weeks farming to get the alliance mules supplied. On the day of the actual event, Bro and Hum whipped out the mules again to supply all the givers with a set of items needed to complete the banquets.

We all made teams of two givers before we were assigned our districts. I teamed up with Sosuke Aizen three times- we were quite the magic team, and at our peak we managed to cover 2(!) districts in one event run. Each team had a runner and an announcer- both equipped with a set of items to be able to cover the possible disconnect of the other. Fortunately this didn't occur in any team as far as I know, but it did enable us to cover a bonus district before everyone's favourite Connect-the-Dots Rat left. So, to sum up my contribution: I ran twice and I shamelessly advertised Sosuke's name around 2 other districts.

Of course, a big party isn't a big party without celebrity guests. Mad Queen Malafide made an appearance, and so did Mog Ruith Of Armagh. There was also, of course, the rather special honour of Gaile Gray herself joining us for the festivities. She even ended up being runner in one of our districts, and spent some time attending the after party in the DVDF Guild Hall. Thanks, Gaile! ♥

Now, what is a festive post without festive screenies? A boring one!

Burning up a ton of Sparklers- my fingers are still sore. :)

Sosuke and my youngest Elementalist, Miss Elvy. Here dream team sponsor duo for... European English District 68, if I recall correctly. :)

My inventory for another giveaway, containing a full set of foodstuffs. Note my sign- I'm a Tiger. Mrawr. :)

Posing with Mad Queen, who graced our district with her presence.

There were many grateful souls. Between my duties as an announcer or as runner, I tried to take the time to reply to them in some small way or other. :)

Gaile Gray showed up for the first time here, partaking in the age-old DVDF tradition of blaming Bird for everything.

We all cheered on the runners. In this case, it concerned EU59 and Mira and Bro formed the dream team.

Gaile was getting quite some practice playing announcer, too. I guess it helps having the purple text. ;)

We definitely weren't the only ones enjoying the community gathering. :)

Some of our members actually do live in Seattle. :)

Gaile's enthusiasm sparked another round of cheers. It was amazing seeing so many excited people gathered in a single district- abandoning all spam, all insults, all random chatter to partake in the festivities for a while.

I don't know how many times Gaile thanked us during her visit, but it certainly was a lot. Hope you're enjoying the shiny displays, Gaile. :)

It was important to let people know that we were sponsoring each visit, and so many districts saw the event end with an announcement similar to this one.

The spoils of the event, after opening all my red gift bags and using up all my tickets. I was too late to hand in my tokens of my 16th quest round, but that didn't kill the joy at all. :)

I cannot, of course, neglect to mention all the souls who helped out to make this community event such a blast. The list of people who farmed, donated or contributed otherwise is endless, and you guys deserve a mention here. You know who you are- thank you so much for all the aid, for helping us keep up our stock, or even for simply attending and having fun. Thank you, too, for the fun chatter, and most importantly of all... thanks for the little (or big) gifts you really needn't have sneaked into the trades. ♥

A few last things to consider:

We were not the only alliance sponsoring. Many other guilds and alliances sponsored districts and helped spread the fun. :)

We helped an estimated 15000 people getting the most out of the Rat's visit. We were successful in every district we attended, and we kept it up for the full 24 hours of the event. Most of all, though, we had an amazingly good time partying with everyone who was there, and we'd certainly enjoy doing a similar thing again. :)

Have a look at this for more stats, and a list of names of contributors.

Yeah thanks to DVDF for the event where we (DotB) foolisly picked dis 7 to host our ingredient run and I couldn't get in :) I could rely on DVDF to make sure I got more fireworks (later we moved to somewhere in the 60 with other LDS-alliance guilds, so couldn't visit when Gaile showed up). Bryder tried to lure me to DVDF districts after that, but I've learned not to listen to Bryder :)

(oh, just noticed, half my friendlist in that list of contributors :))

Oh, there definitely was some hassle picking the right districts. Sosuke and myself had to swap districts too, once, when we realised that another alliance had already claimed the district Shan had appointed for us. Fortunately, no announcements had been made yet, so no one noticed. It was fun getting everyone on Vent to get things sorted- try making sense of 30-odd people who all have something to say. xD

I ran into some LDS people the other day. They told me to hi di hi spam Bro. ^^
Wouterwestland_ska on February 14th, 2008 04:29 pm (UTC)
That would be no other then Liev :) He always tells me that same. Were you in DVDF in the times of the old alliance? (factions release time) with ONL, AnSy, DotB, LDS, etc?
Elvelvea_aure on February 14th, 2008 04:33 pm (UTC)
Liev and a few others, yeah.

I never got to see the ONL days of DVDF- I only joined last year in... March, I think. I'm told it was good fun, though. :)
Wouterwestland_ska on February 14th, 2008 04:37 pm (UTC)
It was :) aw, that doesn't make us old alliance mates then :)

btw, mind if I add you as a friend?
Elvelvea_aure on February 14th, 2008 05:18 pm (UTC)
No, but that doesn't mean we can't be new friends. I don't mind at all.

And sorry about the delay. I fail at typing and monking simultaneously. >>
Wouterwestland_ska on February 14th, 2008 05:20 pm (UTC)
I'm rather quick atm, doing random stuff :) I tend to be slower, don't worry. Tell your team I'm sorry for keeping their monk busy :p (Unless it's Bro, then tell him he's a git ;))

Adding you to LJ now :) My ing is Gonzo Salvato btw
Elv: fading colourselvea_aure on February 14th, 2008 05:25 pm (UTC)
I'm usually quicker, but I have the odd habit of taking monking seriously- especially when the only other monk is a senile old man. >>

So, what did Bro do to deserve all this stuff from you? xD

Will add you after dinner, it's served as we speak. Making room for you on my IG FList- it's full again. -.-*
Wouterwestland_ska on February 14th, 2008 05:26 pm (UTC)
What's your ingame, I'll add you when I get on (should be tonight, Guild Event night).

Nah, bro's a friend of mine, we just give each other a hard time :) He paid me 25k to name my char Bend It Like Gonzo :o Now I'm stuck with it and the money is long gone!
Elv: cold passionelvea_aure on February 14th, 2008 05:56 pm (UTC)
Lady Elvea, my primary account, and The Grapevine, my secondary account.

Haha, good story. Bro spent a good long time in the Guild Hall one day, and promoted(?) me to guild pet. I ended up making a character called Pet Elv. I didn't get 25k, though, do you think I should pester him about it? >>
Wouterwestland_ska on February 14th, 2008 05:57 pm (UTC)
Pestering bro is always good, so yeah :)

I think I'll just camp in the guild hall until he gets on... >>

Incredible. I'm really sorry I missed it. If I'd known these kinds of things were going on, I would definitely have gone. I've wanted to meet your guild for ages now. They seem like very good folks.
